How to create an autumn evening you're actually looking forward to

There are days when, from the very morning, you think about only one thing: getting back home in the evening.
Not because the day is off to a bad start. It’s just that sometimes, from the moment you wake up, you’re looking forward to that specific moment when everything is done, you close the door behind you, and you can finally slow down.
And that’s when I like to create a little evening ritual for myself.
- No big plans.
- No special occasion.
- No figuring out what else needs to be done.
A few simple things are enough to turn an ordinary autumn evening at home into something you truly look forward to.
Start with the light
In autumn, it gets dark much faster, so light immediately starts to matter more.
In the evening, instead of leaving all the lights on, I like to dim them a bit and only leave them on in the spots where I really need light. A lamp next to the sofa. A small light in the other room. And a candle. The flame of a candle gives off a completely different light than a regular lamp. It’s more focused, warm, and calm. It doesn't illuminate the whole room; it just creates a small point around which the entire evening begins to take shape. And that is exactly why, to me, a candle is more than just a decoration.
Lighting it can be a small signal: the day is over. I don’t have to rush anywhere anymore.
Choose a scent for the evening
Light creates the atmosphere, but a scent can perfectly complete it.
There are scents that immediately evoke specific associations. In autumn, I especially like those that remind me of a warm home, baking something good, or a quiet evening. And I think that’s why I don’t have just one scent for the whole autumn season.
One day I’m in the mood for Apple & Cinnamon. Another day for Orange & Chocolate. And when I crave something that reminds me of home baking, I choose Spiced Crumble – Pumpkin & Apple or Banana Nut Bread.
That’s probably one of the coolest things about scented candles — you can choose a scent not just based on the season, but also on the mood you're in that day.
And what about the candle itself?
I think that depends on what you need at the moment.
Sometimes I just want to light a glass candle, dim the lights, and let the fragrance slowly fill the room. In autumn, I’m especially fond of Apple & Cinnamon — it has exactly that association I’m looking for this time of year.
But sometimes, the scent isn’t the most important thing at all.
Sometimes I want to put something on the table that looks like a little piece of autumn itself. Pumpkins, leaves, warm colors, a bit of texture — such decorative candles can set the mood before you even light the wick.
And that’s probably why I like to have both types at home.
One candle sits on the table looking beautiful all day long, and in the evening, I light whichever one I feel like. You don’t have to do a major autumn makeover of your interior. Sometimes just one candle, a mug of something warm, and a bit less light are enough.
That's it.

And one more thing worth remembering
If you burn candles often, a few small things really make a difference.
- When burning for the first time, it’s worth giving the candle enough time so the wax can melt as evenly as possible.
- Before the next burn, it’s a good idea to trim the wick. This makes the flame easier to control and allows the candle to burn more calmly.
- It’s also worth paying attention to where you place it. A draft can cause the flame to flicker and the candle to burn unevenly.
- And of course — never leave a burning candle unattended.
Simple things, but they are exactly what allow you to calmly enjoy your candle for many evenings to come.
Something good to drink and that's all you need
Once the lights are dimmed, the candle is lit, and the house starts to smell like your favorites, all that's left is to find something for yourself.
Tea. Coffee. Hot cocoa.
Or just whatever you’re in the mood for.
I love that moment when I make myself something warm, grab my favorite mug, and know that for the next little while, I don’t have to rush anywhere. Add a book, some music, a series, or just the sofa and some peace and quiet. Not every evening has to be productive. Not every evening has to end with another item checked off the list.
Sometimes the best plan for the evening is to have no plan at all.
Put your phone away. Even for a little while.
This is probably one of the hardest things to do. I know myself how easy it is to tell yourself: “just a little longer.” One more message. One more video. One more thing to check. And then suddenly, an hour goes by...
That’s why sometimes it’s worth just putting the phone away for half an hour. Read a few pages of a book. Listen to some music. Talk to someone close. Or just be with yourself. Such a small reset can do more than another task from your to-do list.
You don't have to wait for the weekend
I feel like we very often postpone pleasant things: to Friday. To the weekend. To a vacation. To the moment when there’s less work. To the day when everything is finally done.
But that list never really seems to end. That’s why I’m increasingly liking to treat myself to little pleasures on an ordinary weekday.
- Light your favorite candle on a Tuesday.
- Make yourself something good to drink on a Wednesday.
- Take a long bath for no reason at all.
- Sit on the sofa and for a moment, don’t demand anything of yourself.
Because maybe an ordinary evening is reason enough.
And I think that’s what it’s all about
You don’t need a perfect home, an entire free evening, or big plans to create a cozy autumn atmosphere. Sometimes all you need is dimmed light, something good to drink, a favorite scent, and a moment where you don’t demand anything of yourself.
A few small things. Just for yourself. And suddenly, an ordinary autumn evening becomes something you truly look forward to. 🤎
